What a volcano tour costs on Lanzarote: all twenty-two listings, line by line

This is the question behind almost every price comparison people make here, so it is worth being blunt about it. The gap between the half-day park trip and the buggy day is not a gap in the scenery, the guide or the weather. It is a gap in what you are physically doing.

The coach listings. $68 and $68 are built around Timanfaya National Park, and inside the park the landscape is shown from a vehicle. A coach drives a fourteen-kilometre circuit through the flows, with a commentary and a stop at the visitor building where the heat held in the ground is demonstrated — dry brush dropped into a pit catches from the warmth coming up out of it. You sit, you look, you photograph through glass and from the stops. That is the product, and the reason it exists is that you are not allowed to wander off across the protected flows on your own.

The buggy listing. $172 is the opposite arrangement: a small group, a two-seat off-road machine, and you at the wheel of it for two to three hours on tracks through the black country outside the park boundary. The listing says pickup available, and it is the most reviewed thing on this site by a wide margin — 5,513 reviews at 4.7. What you are paying for is the machine, the guide riding the route with you, and the fact that nobody else is deciding when you stop. It is more than twice the coach fare because it is more than twice the equipment.

And the walks. $48, $50 and $54 all sit below the coach listings and all take about three hours. They work the lava fields outside the national park road, where walking with a guide is possible, and they are the only way on this site to have the ground under your own boots. If you sort purely by fare you will file them as the budget version of the coach day. They are not. They are a walk, and one of them — volcanohike at 4.9 — is the best rated listing on the whole site.

Laid out in order, the fares on this site fall into four groups, and once you see them the spread stops looking arbitrary.

Under $56: crossings, speedboats and the guided walks. This is where the three walking listings live — $48, $50 and $54 — along with the ferry crossing at $33 and the speedboat at $40. What the walks have in common is that the operator is providing a guide and roughly three hours, not a vehicle and a whole day. Their ratings are the highest on the site: 4.9, 4.8 and 4.8.

Around $56 to $70: the park by coach, and the short runs from the port. The half day and the six-hour day both sit at $68 and $68. The two runs written around a ship’s hours in Arrecife, at $56 and $70, do the same park in less time because they have less time to work with. The nine-hour island day at $58 lands here too: it costs little more than the half day because you are sharing a full coach for the whole of it.

Around $71 to $102: long days and second destinations. Everything in this band is either crossing water or adding a major site to the volcanoes. $100 pairs the park with the lava tunnel at Jameos del Agua; $102 adds Cueva de los Verdes as well and runs nine hours; $95 brings you over from Fuerteventura with transport included. You are paying for distance and for hours, and the listings say so plainly.

$172: the machine you drive. The buggy listing sits on its own at the top, and it is the only listing on this site where you are operating the vehicle rather than sitting in one. It is also, by a distance, the most reviewed thing here. That combination — a small group, a machine each, a guide leading the route — is what the fare is for.

One more thing worth saying out loud. None of these listings hide a compulsory extra in the small print. What a listing says is included is what is included, and where it does not mention something, that thing is not in the fare. The camel stop at the entrance to the park is the clearest example: it is a separate paid attraction at the roadside, and it is not part of any tour on this site. We do not quote a figure for it, or for park admission, because the listings do not publish one.

Read the pickup, not just the fare. A listing that collects you from your hotel in Puerto del Carmen and a listing that meets you at a car park in the south of the island are quoting for different amounts of your morning. Check what happens after the volcanoes. Four listings here run eight hours or more. If your week already has plans in it, a long listing is not better value, it is a whole day committed. $56 compresses the park and the green lagoon into two and a half hours for exactly that reason, and it carries 2,155 reviews at 4.6, so plenty of people want it that way.

Watch the review counts, not only the ratings. Most of this site sits between 4.2 and 4.9, which makes the ratings look interchangeable. The counts do not: buggy carries 5,513, highlights 3,303, timanfayajameos 2,845 and timanfayahalf 2,785, while several perfectly good listings are still around a thousand. A 4.9 on 945 reviews and a 4.7 on 5,513 are different kinds of evidence, and the table above shows both so you can weigh them yourself.
